Phoenix Comicon (PCC) 2012 - Recap

Alright, now that several days have passed from Comicon 2012, I can finally write my recap.

This year was quite different from last year. It wasn’t my cousin and I going to the con and doing our own thing. It was me, my fiancee, our friend Lauren and my fiancee’s little brother. It was a whole different experience being in a group then having just two people.

At times it was a little overwhelming especially in the exhibition hall since it was so packed and hard to maneuver yourself let alone three others. But the experience was definitely worth wild. I think we spent more time playing board games than we did anything else. We played one game,Ticket to Ride, which was quite entertaining. However, it seems like whenever we play a board game I am the one to beat? Or at least that’s the way it seems because Lauren is always trying to beat me. I can proudly (or shamefully) say that I did not win one of game of Ticket to Ride.

However, I will always kick your butt at Settlers of Catan, Lauren.

This huge difference between PCC this year compared to last year was the amount of celebrities that I wanted to see. Last year there was Wil Wheaton, Aaron Douglas (From Battlestar Galacitca), Alex Albrecht (Diggnation), Sandeep Parikh (The Guild) and Jeff Lewis (The Guild). This year there were really only two in particular that I wanted to see, Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica) and Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead). I was really on fence about going to Comicon due to the fact there was a lack of interest in the people attending this year. However, I am glad that I went.

I was able to score a couple of photos with Jamie Bamber and also got his autograph. He was a really cool guy to talk to but his thick accent really threw me off at first. I did not expect him to a British accent but then again all I know him from his Battlestar Galactica. He introduced himself and I said I was Jamie too, but pointed out the fact its short of Jameson. He was like “Oh like my favorite Irish Whiskey?”. We got to talking about how I get free shots of Jameson when I go into an Irish bar. On the autograph that I got from him he wrote “To Jamie: my favorite Irish Tipple” He was really a great guy and easy to talk. I want to meet more of the cast of Battlestar Galactica.

What really made Phoenix Comicon worth it this year was meeting Jon Bernthal who played Shane in The Walking Dead. I will flat out say, and Cori can confirm this; that I dislike the character Shane. He was a dick in the show and was on the brink of getting everyone killed. But meeting Jon has changed my mind about his character just based of his actual personality. He was a very down to earth person and ever so grateful for his fans.

Cori and I had Jon sign our Walking Dead compendium and we both decided it would be awesome to have him sign the part where Shane dies in the book. He wrote “Thanks for watching guys, you rock” and then asked us if he could write in the book next to Shane’s dead body. We of course told him he could do whatever, I mean come on… its fucking Shane. He asked if profanity was alright we said we didn’t care. So he added his own little chat bubble which said “You fucking jerk. I can’t help it if your wife is hot and there wasn’t anyone else around.” I couldn’t stop laughing at what he wrote, and I also feel like I can gloat about it which I do… all the time…

Also, the Walking Dead panel Shane did was absolutely amazing. And if you don’t believe me then you need to watch this video.

Overall, the experience of PCC 2012 was a lot different than last year, but for the better. It definitely makes me want to come back to Phoenix next year for the next Comicon.

Jon pitched to writers what he wanted to happen. Everything plays out the same way, but Rick throws his gun and Shane puts his gun to Ricks head, taunting him, but Rick stabs him. Then has Shane reanimates, Rick grabs Shane guns and tries to shoot Shane, but the gun was empty, making us to believe that Shane wanted Rick to kill him because Shane knew he was becoming the cancer in the group. Then Carl shoots Shane for the save. Don’t know why they didn’t go that route. It would have made sense since after the talk with Lori.
